El Camino Cocktail

As featured in Episode 125: “Baby, You Can Drive My Car!”

This one’s for the car lovers, the deal negotiators, the dashboard DJs—and anyone who’s ever named their vehicle like a pet. The El Camino is a smooth, stirred cocktail that packs a little mystery and a lot of charm—kind of like the car itself.

We sipped this one while chatting about our daughters getting their first cars, car buying nightmares, and the surprisingly deep connection we all have to our rides. (Spoiler: Dave made Reese cry-laugh more than once.)

We had to improvise just a little when we realized we were out of orange bitters, so we swapped in lemon bitters—and honestly? Not mad about it. The citrusy zing actually played really nicely with the tequila and amaro. Try it either way and see what revs your engine.

🍸 El Camino Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Tequila (we used blanco)

  • 1 oz Amaro (something with depth like Averna or Montenegro works great)

  • 1 dash Orange Bitters (or Lemon Bitters, if you’re out like we were)

  • Ice

  • Large ice cube (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Combine tequila, amaro, and bitters in a mixing glass with ice.

  2. Stir until well-chilled—about 20-30 seconds.

  3. Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube.

  4. Garnish optional: a twist of orange or lemon peel, depending on your bitters choice.

  5. Sip and discuss your first car (bonus points if it was a LeBaron or a Buick Skylark).

This one’s bold but balanced—kind of like buying a used car and hoping for the best. Whether you’re a practical Kia driver or a secretly dreaming-of-a-Saab romantic, the El Camino will steer you right.

Let us know if you try it—and definitely tell us what your first car was.
